sewing frenzy

My new love.

While Mike’s mom was visiting soon after Violet’s birth, she helped me to choose a new sewing machine. The one I previously had was having issues, and I didn’t see the point in paying to have a cheap, 8-year-old machine fixed. Even though I had my eye on some sewing machines on sale at the local NEX (Navy Exchange), Kathy recommended that I consider taking my sewing machine purchase seriously and invest a little more than I had originally planned. I must say I’m so glad that I took her suggestion because I’m now the proud owner of a Pfaff Expression 2.0. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles (and the price tag) of a fancy embroidery machine, but this machine has everything I need and more. One of the features that Pfaff machines offers that no other brand has is the IDT which is basically a built-in walking foot that ensures even fabric feed. The automatic tie-off at the beginning and end of each seam also saves me from many headaches. I love the extra arm length which allows for bigger projects (boy, I could’ve used this when I was sewing all those Roman shades). There are ton more features that I could spend pages writing about, but I’m happy with the just the ones I’ve list above.

The couple of sewing projects I’ve done so far on my new helper have gone way more faster than had I done them on my ex-helper. I’m actually excited about sewing and have been searching for more projects to do. Tons of accessories and feet are available for this machine, and I’ve already got my eye on a presser foot that automatically makes pleats for you called the ruffler attachment. There are tons of girls’ clothing projects that I’ve wanted to make, and this foot would help me do them even faster. The piping foot will also come in handy when I make the slipcover for our sectional this winter. You heard that right, I plan to slipcover our newish sectional. You see, the fabric on it is absolute garbage and started tearing up on the cushions after having the sectional for just 2 months. Fortunately, we got all our money back and were able to keep the sectional. We tried to decide what our best options would be (purchase new furniture, have the current piece professionally reupholstered, or cover it myself), and slipcovering would obviously be the least expensive plan. We’ll see what comes of that project.

Enough rambling about my lovely, new sewing machine. I seriously could go on and on for days, but I’ll not bore you anymore. In the meantime, take a sneak peek at my current project. I’ll hopefully have it complete by tomorrow. Can you guess what they are? Mimi’s guess is that they are arms. I can tell you that they are not arms.

Rattles to match all those cute shoes? You’ve really stumped me. Can’t wait to find out what they are. Thanks for the shoe pattern – I love Michael Miller fabrics – made Nikki a dress earlier this summer (knitted top) with MM fabric on the bottom.

I have a Pfaff serger and I love it. It always feeds evenly. I has come in really handy when making dresses for Nikki (I can serge all the inside seams instead of having the french seam them all – much less time consuming. I have a Bernina sewing/quilting machine (which also comes with lots of “fancy” feet). I can’t say enough about my love of those feet, quilters walking foot, free motion foot, zipper foot, ruffler (I love that one :-) , cording foot, buttonhole foot, jeans foot (short people are always hemming jeans (but keeping the original hem intact)….oh the list of feet I love goes on and on – I add at least a few per year to my growing collection – they make projects so much easier – Congrats on your new toy – you’ll love having it!

Fish…or ties…or bowling pins???? I have no idea.

And you know I hate talented people. Everyone tells me how easy it is to sew and it is so far over my head…so, so far! I am so jealous!

Here fishie, fishie, fishie…maybe? I think they would be cute arms, though. Or will you string them and put them on the Christmas tree. Actually, I need to see something next to them so I can approximate size.

Congrats on the new machine. I love my sewing machine and all the fun stuff that comes with it. I wish you a long and happy relationship.

You’ve peaked my curiosity, but I’m not brave enough to even venture a guess, but I’m sure I’ll love it when you’re done!
