farmhouse project share
Life moves so fast around here. It’s just not possible that next week will introduce March. Time has floated by so quickly that I almost forgot to share some of the projects that I’ve completed in the past few months. I’ve been feeling inadequate lately about all the projects I have supplies for but never get around to doing. Reminding myself that I have completed a few projects recently makes me feel a little better. Just a little.
For years I’ve been trying to think of a way I could revamp the headboard for our guest bed. With the influx of upholstered headboards I’ve been seeing everywhere, it occurred to me that I could just cover that ugly picket fence thing up with fabric. Right about the time the weather was turning cold I managed to wrap up (literally, ha) this project outside. I was surprised at how easy and quick I was able to do it. It really only took me about 30 minutes from start to finish.
Now that I have to do dishes by hand each evening it was starting to bother me that all I had to stare at was an unsightly, beige wall. After I saw this pin on Pinterest I finally found a solution that would I be thrilled to stare at all day. Here’s my version.
You may also notice some wall hangings to the left. I spotted those prints on Etsy a long time ago and knew it would be something I could make easily on my own in Photoshop. I finally had a place I thought would be perfect for them. Now my family and I have a little reminder of the gospel and what it means to our eternal family each time we walk in the door.

I have some ideas for the other side of the kitchen but have not yet begun to plan them out, so I will not be revealing the ugliness that is the other 2/3 of my kitchen. You did notice the beige walls and olive countertop from picture #4 above. Yeah, I just refer to it as my camouflage kitchen.

You are so capable!!! I would never think of covering the picket fence into an upholstered headboard. And I love the figurines. I can see them at Anthropologie right now, selling for $56. And the framed pictures are a very nice touch. How did you do it?

I thought the Skymall on the nightstand was a nice touch. I didn’t have a chance to look through it while I was visiting this past week.
Nice job on the decorating endeavors. You have done much with what you have.

Thanks, Jenni! I appreciate the positive comments. However, I doubt anyone would pay $56 for my spray painted thrift store finds. Although I’m constantly amazed at what is on trend these days. As far as the framed pictures, I just found some frames at Target that already had the matting inside. I found a clipart picture of the SL Temple and selected the outline of it and filled with white to make it a solid, white image. Then I just played around with fonts on both the “i love to see the temple” and “families can be together forever” until I got the look I wanted. Lastly, I printed the prints onto photo paper to make the colors more vibrant. Otherwise, I find if I print on paper the colors tend to bleed into the paper and get washed out. It was actually a pretty easy project and really satisfying when it was all ready to hang on the walls.

Yes, I like make sure my guests are treated to luxury and comfort which is why the “Sky Mall” must remain a constant fixture in the bedroom. Thanks for the compliments. I like to think I’ve been able to make our humble abode a cute one and on a shoestring budget. I think you can appreciate that, since you are the Shoebox Princess of the Shoebox Castle.

You are so good at making things pretty. I know my bare walls and neutral colors always drove you crazy. I guess I should have put you to work making it look good. Oh well, at least you are responsible for my family pics…the one decorative touch in my house. By the way, EVERYONE who comes in my house comments on those pictures. Now please come back and do the rest of my house and teach me to use my new camera while you’re here. Ha,ha! I am getting excited to see the farm, and you guys of course.

You know I would love to have done more to those bare walls of yours, but we really made a ton of progress with the pictures above your couch. I’m glad you love them. I do, too, and wish I could have done something similar with my family picture display.
I’m really looking forward to you guys visiting, too. I pray that the weather will be awesome and that we can do lots of fun stuff. Been keeping my eye out for good deals for waterpark, but nothing for the dates we need yet.

Love, Love, Love your kitchen! I suddenly feel like I”m not not the only one with a 1970′s kitchen. My countertops are bright turquoise, nearly fluorescent – I assure you and promise to post pics once I’m well – pics from my one but 70′s kitchen will surely make you feel better plus my cabinets are lacquered (and I mean lacquered) a lovely shade of honey pine, wow and yuck! New kitchen is on the way once I recover in about 6 more weeks and can manage workers in our addition again…Looking forward to a kitchen more modern features! For now, just enjoying a clean floor – provided by my mom

Oh, almost forgot, really love the guest bedroom updates and am inspired by your look – Now, once I can lift over 5 pounds again – that’s my limit until Easter – I think I could try to update our guest bed. grocery shopping involves the help of either my husband or children right now. All the bags weigh more than 5 pounds and I normally carry them up a flight of stairs to get to the kitchen, not allowed right now. Boy, aside from being in pain, doing nothing is beginning to wear on me after 2.5 weeks, about 6 weeks to go – I need a new hobby and some blinders for the dust bunnies around here

Wow, turquoise countertops. I do love me some turquoise, but I think that that would be over the top (ha, no pun intended). I would love to see you pictures of your 70′s kitchen. My cabinets are the plain plywood doors with no decoration. Thankfully, someone decided to paint them white. That’s the only good thing our kitchen has going for it these days.
Only 5 pounds, huh? Well, make you sure you take full advantage of this break. You deserve it! Can you knit right now? That may be a good way to pass the time. Or at least read some good books. I’m in a book club now, so I can give you some suggestions.

Jen – Sent you a message to your email about what’s going on with me…would love some book suggestions. I tend to read “farm” books mostly, gardening, chickens and of late dog books to help me with our puppies! Maybe it’s time for some good novels. It’s been a while and I’m not sure what to read. I am knitting but with pain I find myself easily frustrated and tired. The anemia and hemoglobin are leaving me tired after simple tasks. Spring, Easter and being fully recovered (I see the Dr. April 6th and hope to get a full release then but the dr. warned me that I might get a partial release and need 2 more weeks before a full release to normal activity). The hardest part has definitely been missing Skiing! It’s such a big part of our life here. We got 14 inches of snow last week and 5 more over the weekend. I would love to get out and ski- looks like it’ll be next season before I can ski again. I have missed most of the kids races too. Getting sick isn’t fun when you’re a mom! The Lord must be testing me or trying to teach me to slow down or something????
